WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) today issued the following statement in response to President Obama’s formal request for a new authorization for the use of military force (AUMF) against ISIL.
“It is necessary for the president to put forth a clear strategy to fight and defeat ISIL and its affiliates,” Rep. Scalise said. “The president’s request for authorization for the use of military force (AUMF) is an important first step in demonstrating the commitment from both the executive and Congress to defeat this organization, but there is clearly more work left to be done. The upcoming congressional hearings will provide the Administration an opportunity to lay out their plan to defeat this radical Islamic terrorist threat and to make their case to Congress and the American people for an AUMF. I urge the Administration to remain engaged in this process and work with Congress so that we may confront and defeat ISIL and the threat they pose to our nation and our way of life.”
