WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La) issued the following statement following House passage of H.R. 1105, the “Death Tax Repeal Act of 2015.” H.R. 1105 passed with bipartisan support, 240-179.
“American families spend a lifetime building financial security so that they can pass on their piece of the American Dream to their children,” Rep. Scalise said. “It is immoral that the federal government comes in and confiscates 40 percent of a family’s business that they spent a lifetime building when they die. The Death Tax takes away from a family’s ability to grow their business and costs us jobs and economic growth. The government should not be in the business of punishing success and forcing people to sell the family business when they die. I urge the Senate to quickly take up this bill, and I applaud Rep. Brady for introducing this legislation and standing up for hardworking American taxpayers.”
