WASHINGTON, D.C.— House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) released the following statement regarding President Trump’s State of the Union Address:
“First, I want to thank President Trump for highlighting the heroic work of Jon Bridgers and Louisiana’s own Cajun Navy in his State of the Union Address. As our country is now a full year into the Trump presidency, it was uplifting to hear the President talk tonight about all of the real results we have seen in the last year and about the people across the country who have answered the call to help make our country great, and the folks of the Cajun Navy are some of the best examples.
“In this last year with President Trump in office, our country has come a long way from the stagnation and weakness of the Obama-era and rebounded to a place of growth and strength. Thanks to the regulatory relief and pro-growth policies we have implemented, America is open for business once again. With Congressional Republicans and President Trump working side by side to pass the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act into law this past December, we have already seen our economy take off, with companies like Fiat Chrysler moving plants back from Mexico to the United States, creating thousands of good-paying jobs here at home.
“Most importantly, Americans are seeing higher paychecks and more take-home pay in their wallets. In just the last month, nearly 300 companies have announced raises, bonuses, more benefits, and increased investments, directly impacting over 3 million families. Even better, Americans at all income levels get to keep more of their paychecks with the tax cuts we enacted. That’s not ‘crumbs’ as Democrats may claim, but to hardworking families across this country it’s a mortgage payment, a month’s grocery bill, a student loan payment, or money for a rainy day. That makes a real difference in people’s lives.
“People in our country are also now assured that we are no longer leading from behind, and are finally putting the safety and security of our citizens and our troops first. I was glad to hear President Trump reiterate his commitment to put our interests first around the world to stand up for our values and our allies in the face of threats from radical Islamic terrorism and violence around the globe. That includes securing our borders and restoring the rule of law within our country so criminals are no longer allowed to illegally enter our neighborhoods.
“When President Trump ran for office, he pledged to make our country great again and put America first. Though there remains a lot of work ahead of us, his address tonight affirmed that we have made extraordinary progress already in just one short year, and I look forward to continuing to work with him every day to achieve results for the American people.”
