WASHINGTON, D.C.— House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) talked with national and local media following the State of the Union last night to praise the strong economic and national security message the President delivered after his first year of delivering results for the American people.

“To actually get families who were the victims of some of these people who have come here illegally with ill-intent – gang members and others – and to show what they’ve done and why it’s so important we secure our border like every other nation does. It really resonated and it really isolated those radical liberals who want to stand in the way of the rule of law and us securing our own borders. Most people in this country agree we should secure our borders. How [Democrats] could sit down and disagree with that policy and not respect the fact that there are real families who are hurting and who have lost loved ones to gang members who have come here illegally – let’s clamp down on these loopholes that are out there and actually get back to rule of law.”

“I thought President Trump had such a positive and upbeat and inspiring tone. He really talked about not only how successful these tax cuts are, but he brought in real people that have benefited; the young man, the welder, that was able to buy his first house. So many success stories, and people have become part of the American Dream. And that’s really what he’s focussed on and we focussed on when we passed that legislation.”

“It’s just really special that [President Trump] continues to root for my recovery and he’s a special man, he’s a warm man, and many people don’t get to see that side of him. I’ve been blessed to see it all the way through this, and I think a lot more people saw that tonight.”

“President Trump has been a very warm person to me; literally from the hours after I was in the hospital, he and Melania came to the hospital immediately and when I was fighting for my life he really provided great comfort to Jennifer, my wife who was there, and he called me a lot of times throughout the three and a half months I was in the hospital just to check on me. So it was nice to see people see that side of Donald Trump that I’ve been able to see for a lot of my struggle. To receive that kind of ovation – my colleagues, both Republican and Democrat have really rallied around my recovery and followed it. I had another surgery two weeks ago and they really checked on it and embraced my comeback, and so, again, it’s a side of politics you don’t get to see too often, but it’s really provided a lot of strength to me and I love that support.”

“You know, when you’re fighting for your life for three and a half months and after awhile you start wanting to get out of the hospital and back to things you love. My kids were there with me a lot, so I got to see them, but I really wanted to get back to work and I was able to get back to work so God’s been good to me. It’s just been fun to be a part of what we’re doing right now to get this country back on track. This is a rare opportunity in the country’s history. Not often do you get these kind of chances to turn a country around and we were heading in the wrong direction – you’ve talked about this a lot – every quarter for eight years [we had] less than two percent growth and people just figured that’s as a good as it’s going to be, America’s declined. And we haven’t! There’s just a desire for somebody to turn it around and President Trump came and did it and look how much economic opportunity there is for people all across the spectrum. The American Dream is alive and well again.”
