WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) today issued the following statement after the House Ways and Means Committee passed H.R. 692, the Default Prevention Act.
“The Default Prevention Act ensures that negotiations on the debt ceiling are not derailed by the threat of default, and instead are focused on solving the underlying spending problem in Washington that is driving our growing debt,” Scalise said. “Hitting the debt ceiling is a symptom of Washington’s spending problem, and it’s vital that we not only solve that problem to prevent Washington from maxing out the nation’s credit card in the future, but that we do it in a way that takes default off the table. Reining in Washington’s out-of-control spending and restoring fiscal sanity are among my very top priorities in Congress. I applaud and thank Congressman Tom McClintock for his leadership on this issue, and Chairman Ryan and the Ways and Means Committee for quickly approving this critical legislation. I look forward to this measure passing the House and ultimately becoming law.”
Scalise is a cosponsor of the Default Prevention Act.
