WASHINGTON, D.C.—Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) issued the following statement today regarding news that negotiators in the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) have reached an agreement:
“Today’s announcement by the U.S. Trade Representative underscores the importance of Congress’s and the American people’s role in trade agreements. Thanks to the Trade Priorities and Accountability (TPA) legislation Congress passed earlier this year, this agreement must meet high standards and be available to the public for 60 days before Congress can even begin a long process of consideration. When it comes to opening up markets for American goods overseas, we need a strong, enforceable deal that benefits America and helps American workers earn better take-home pay. In the days and weeks ahead, my colleagues and I will thoroughly review and analyze this deal to see that it meets the high standards set by Congress.”
