WASHINGTON, D.C.—Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) issued the following statement regarding President Obama’s address to the nation tonight:

“To defeat ISIS, America needs strong leadership and a strong strategy. It’s clear that President Obama’s current approach isn’t working, and our intelligence community tells us ISIS is not contained, much less defeated. Unfortunately, the President’s speech tonight offered little acknowledgement of this fact, and no indication that he will change his approach so we can defeat this urgent threat. Rather than trying to take away the 2nd Amendment rights of law-abiding Americans, the President needs to lay out a clear strategy to defeat ISIS.

“The American people deserve to know their government is doing everything in its power to keep them safe from terrorist attacks, and that is why the House will be passing bipartisan legislation in the coming days to reform the troubled visa waiver program. We stand ready to work with the President on aggressive measures he brings forward to confront this serious threat to America’s national security.”
