WASHINGTON, D.C.—House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) released the following statement regarding the House’s passage of the Agriculture and Nutrition Act of 2018:
“American farmers are the backbone of our country, feeding not only just our nation, but the world’s population as well. This farm bill ensures that the United States can remain the world leader in food production, and removes the burdensome red-tape holding our farmers back from growing and getting their products to consumers.
“With our economy booming at record rates thanks to Republican tax cuts and regulatory rollbacks, our employers are looking to hire new workers now more than ever, with over six million jobs available. Although unemployment has dropped to its lowest rate in nearly 20 years, the number of people on SNAP has ballooned from 17 million to 41 million. With the reforms we enact in this bill, we will help Americans move away from government dependence and into the workforce with the skills they need to be independent and provide for themselves and their families. Everyone deserves the dignity of a job, and these long overdue reforms will help put people on the path to work.
“I am thankful to Agriculture Committee Chairman Mike Conaway for all his work on this important bill that meets the needs of our farmers, consumers, and workers, and encourage the Senate to do the right thing and pass this bill so it can be signed into law by President Trump.”
