WASHINGTON, D.C.—House Republican Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) will travel with Vice President Pence as he visits Opelousas, La. today to join the community in its continued recovery after the recent burning of three predominantly African American Baptist churches. Over the course of ten days, the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Opelousas, the Greater Union Baptist Church in Opelousas, and St. Mary Baptist Church in Port Barre, were all intentionally set on fire and completely destroyed.

“Violence and attacks on our religious institutions are never acceptable. In the coming months, I hope that justice is achieved, and these historic churches are rebuilt,” said Whip Scalise

“I thank Vice President Pence for visiting South Louisiana during this time to lend his support to the members of these congregations. I pray that as we recover from this tragedy, our communities may grow even stronger and more unified and that we may finally put an end to racism and violence.”
