WASHINGTON, D.C.— Mere weeks ago, Democratic leaders were engaging in hysterical hyperbole over the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, dishonestly telling the American people that it would result in “Armageddon,” a “plunder[ing] of the middle class,” “one of the greatest robberies in American history,” harming children like “Tiny Tim,” tens of thousands more Americans dying each year, and a “heist that would steal from millions of middle-c;ass families.”
Yet, less than two weeks after the bill was signed into law, American families, workers, and businesses are seeing through the lies as over 100 companies have publicly announced they will award bonuses, raise wages, hire more workers, and increase investments and charitable contributions. To those outside Washington, this is far from the end of the world and, in fact, comes as welcome news. Take Toshiko Threatt-Monroe, from Florida:
“Toshiko ‘Tee’ Threatt-Monroe, the lead customer-service representative at Fifth Third’s Lakeland branch at 435 S. Combee Road, said she heard rumors of a bonus but didn’t believe it until the company announced it in an email on Dec. 22, three days after the tax bill passed.
“The announcement excited the entire office, she said.
“’I was excited as well,’ Threatt-Monroe said. ‘I read the email and said to myself, ’Oh my God, this is actually happening.’”
Tax reform is about making a difference in people’s lives for the better, and it’s only just begun.
