WASHINGTON, D.C.—House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) released the following statement after the 2018 Farm Bill passed the House in an overwhelming, bipartisan vote of 369-47. After successful negotiations between the House and Senate, this comprehensive legislation will bring greater economic stability to farmers and ranchers and reforms the SNAP program to give Americans greater opportunity to achieve the American Dream.
“Today’s passage of the Farm Bill is a win for farmers, ranchers, consumers, and all American workers. As the breadbasket of the world, this Farm Bill will provide the certainty and economic stability they need to continue to succeed and lead the world in food production. Our farmers and ranchers not only put food on the tables of Americans, but on those of families around the world.
“This bill also includes key reforms to the SNAP program that will help millions of Americans move from government dependence to work and self-sufficiency. With a strong economy and more job openings than Americans looking for work, there has never been a better time to help unemployed Americans get back in the workforce so they can support their families and achieve the American dream.
“Lastly, the conference agreement includes the House bill’s provision that I fought hard to include to create new funding opportunities for Roseau cane scale research. This is vital to Louisiana’s First District and our efforts to prevent coastal-erosion.
“I applaud Chairman Mike Conaway for all of his strong leadership in negotiating this legislation with the Senate, and I am glad to have been able to work with him to lead this bill to passage in the House. I look forward to President Trump signing it into law.”
