House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) today released the following statement on the 43rd anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision on Roe v. Wade:
“On this 43rd Anniversary of Roe v. Wade, it’s important to remember that our Declaration of Independence states that we are guaranteed the ‘right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.’ Life, of course, is fundamental to all other rights. Yet, over the last four decades 58 million babies have died through abortion. As human beings, we must not turn a blind eye. Instead, we must take a stand and give voices to the most vulnerable among us — the unborn.
“This is especially true after last year, when videos were released showing officials in Planned Parenthood clinics bartering over body parts of aborted babies. In response, the House led in moving a bill through Congress that made it all the way to the President’s desk to defund abortion providers like Planned Parenthood. Unfortunately, President Obama doesn’t share our values and he vetoed that bill. I will continue to stand alongside all those who defend the lives of the unborn at the annual March for Life in DC. We should all work together to promote a culture that respects life at every stage, including in the womb, and I will continue fighting for the American values that make our country the greatest in the world.”
