WASHINGTON, D.C.— Republican Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) released the following statement after the majority of House Democrats voted down the Motion to Recommit H.R. 267, which would fund additional housing vouchers for persons with disabilities:
“After House Republicans worked on a bipartisan basis to provide new housing vouchers for Americans with disabilities, House Democrats today voted instead to direct those funds toward a ballooning budget for mismanaged IT systems. The Department of Housing and Urban Development’s IT Fund budget has grown by $50,000,000 in the past three years ‘due to HUD’s inability to retire obsolete, unproductive, and expensive information technology systems.’
“This was a simple choice: pour millions more into obsolete IT systems or support housing for our most vulnerable citizens. House Republicans overwhelmingly supported the 7,200 new housing vouchers. Democrats overwhelmingly voted against them.
“Prioritizing American taxpayers over mismanaged bureaucratic programs isn’t just good governance, it’s common sense. Sadly, it seems Democrats can’t get their priorities straight.”
