Abraham Lincoln was one of America’s greatest Presidents. His life was a story of adversity, perseverance, and leadership. When America was at her darkest hour, he fought to end slavery, he brought our country back together, and he became the father of the Republican party. To honor his legacy, I have named this historic room in the Capitol, The Lincoln Room. As a Congressman, Lincoln spent time right here. His desk, where he worked and voted, was just steps away from this room. His time here serves as a powerful reminder of what we’re fighting for, opportunity for all Americans regardless of their background. The same opportunity that let a boy born in a single-room log cabin in rural Kentucky go on to become America’s 16th President. Everyone deserves that chance, to make something of themselves regardless of where they started in life. I think we can all take heart from Lincoln’s example, as we work together to build a positive new vision for our great nation.
