WASHINGTON, D.C.— House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) released the following statement after a resolution he cosponsored, H.Res. 676, supporting the rights of the people of Iran to free expression, condemning the Iranian regime for its crackdown on legitimate protests, and for other purposes, passed the House:

“The House of Representatives sent a clear message today that we support the Iranian people’s fundamental freedoms to speak out and protest the cruel and corrupt regime that oppresses its own people and has wrought terror across the Middle East. It’s clear that the people of Iran have not seen the economic benefits they were promised from President Obama’s falsely-sold Iran deal that was a cash infusion for the Ayatollah and Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to fund its exploits and terrorist organizations worldwide.

“The Obama administration’s failed Iran policy is now on full display for the world to see and the Iranian people’s protests cannot be ignored again. The United States and the West must hold the regime accountable for its crackdown of protests, censorship, and all human rights violations. I am glad we have now restored American leadership under President Trump and commend those that continue to speak out and exercise their basic human rights that are the foundation to any free society.”
