WASHINGTON, D.C.— House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) made the following statement regarding President Trump’s announcement formally recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, as the House and Senate have both previously unanimously supported.

“Today President Trump actually followed through on what most politicians have simply talked about for years and fulfilled his promise to recognize the reality that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel and begin the steps necessary to move the U.S. Embassy there. Congress has long maintained that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel, and I applaud President Trump for once again demonstrating strong leadership on the world stage in support of our strongest ally in the Middle East as we show that we do not let terrorists dictate the terms for peace.”
