WASHINGTON, D.C.—House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) issued the following statement regarding the President’s announcement that he has reached a new trade agreement with Canada:

“I applaud President Trump for this impressive new agreement with Canada. While many in Washington claimed it could not be done, President Trump worked tirelessly to bring Canada to the table and negotiate a new trade deal that is better for American workers and consumers.

“Thanks to President Trump’s vision and hard work, American families are poised to benefit from new, fair terms of trade with our neighbors in both Canada and Mexico — and from the resulting economic growth that will come with these better deals.

“Now, this agreement must go through the process laid out in the Bipartisan Congressional Trade Priorities and Accountability Act (TPA). Congress takes seriously its responsibilities under TPA, and I look forward to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to ensure that this modern, fair trade agreement is put in place so that our nation can begin reaping even more benefits.”

Recently, Scalise called on Canada to come to the table and join the United States and Mexico in good faith negotiations toward a modernized free trade agreement, making clear that if Canada continued to delay, Congress would take whatever steps necessary to stand up for American workers.
